When it comes to variety in rings, titanium rings are very versatile. Titanium rings can come in many colors, including blue, gray, and silver, and they have many advantages over gold and silver rings. First of all, titanium rings are much cheaper, they are much harder, and titanium rings are much more durable and scratch resistant.
There are two other major advantages to titanium rings. They are hypoallergenic, meaning they won’t irritate your skin if you any sensitive allergies to certain metals, and they are extremely light, at only 4.5 grams per cubic centimeter. At 4.5 g/cm3, they are four times lighter than gold, more than twice as light as silver, and titanium rings are more than three times lighter than tungsten carbide. Basically, you won’t even feel it’s there.
Titanium rings are the second hardest ring you can buy, behind tungsten carbide. This means they are very hard to scratch, but titanium rings do scratch eventually.
Titanium rings however, have certain dangers, though not ones you are likely to come into contact with on any daily, yearly, or centurial basis. Titanium rings can actually explode when put into direct contact with chlorine gas, forming the more stable compound titanium tetrachloride. Titanium rings can also explode when they come into contact with liquid oxygen, forming titanium dioxide.
So when wearing a titanium ring, be sure not to be walking around in a chlorine gas chamber, and do not, under any circumstances, bathe in liquid oxygen while wearing titanium rings. Other than that, you should be safe. Bathing in liquid oxygen and frolicking around in chlorine gas tanks have other fatal side effects as well, which would make the fact that you titanium ring would explode rather inconsequential, since you’d be dead anyway before it happened.
When titanium rings catch fire, they cannot be put out with water. So don’t even try. A titanium ring fire has to be put out with other fire retardants that you can only find in your local fire extinguisher.
Now that we have thoroughly discussed the dangers of titanium rings, you can be secure in your purchase, knowing full well the risks of liquid oxygen baths and chlorine and such. But know this. The metal is used in the space industry. That’s very important…
