Men’s rings, or more specifically – men’s wedding rings are a fairly recent custom. Throughout history, men have been regarded as their wives’ owners, often having multiple wives, or leading Harems. Thus, they were not bound to any particular woman, and wore no rings to symbolize a monogamous relationship. It wasn’t until World War II that men’s wedding bands became fashionable items, as the reminded men of the devoted women waiting for them at home.
Men’s wedding bands, just like women’s wedding rings, typically consist of a plain metal band in either gold or silver. This plain perfectly round, never ending circle symbolizes an everlasting commitment. The ring is placed on the fourth finger. According to Ancient Egyptian and Roman belief, a single artery ran from this finger directly to the heart. Thus, placing the wedding ring on this particular finger symbolized the great devotion that reins in the heart of the ring’s wearer. Once married, some men consider it bad luck to ever remove the wedding band, as this would cause a break in the bind between the two spouses.
Though plain metal bands are the most common choice for men’s wedding bands, there are actually several other interesting wedding band possibilities in the market, some say almost as many as there are for women’s wedding rings. The first choice is, of course, the metal out of which the band is made. Choices include, yellow gold alloys, white gold alloys, silver, platinum, and titanium. Since men often do more with their hands than women do, and rougher tasks at that, many men make it a priority to choose a durable metal for their wedding band. Titanium and platinum are good choices for this purpose, as they very rarely scratch, and are easily cleaned.
The next thing to consider is band width, and here too, men have a lot of alternatives. They range from about 4 mm to 10 mm, and contrary to popular belief, men’s wedding rings can be adorned with gemstones and have intricate patterns, just like women’s wedding rings may.
