What is a Fashion Ring?

Fashion Ring

You’ve heard the term “fashion ring” tossed around plenty, I’m sure.  Maybe you’ve seen it in a style magazine or a fashion blog. Or maybe you overheard people talking about fashion rings in the mall. Some say that the term “fashion rings” technically refers to rings that incorporate only fake gemstones, cheap metal and imitation design. According to one of my friends, “fashion jewelry” should really be called “unfashionable jewelry”.

Technically, the term does refer to faux, costume jewelry.  “Fashion rings” was initially a term that only defined rings that were made of silver rather than gold and that were encrusted with crystals or cubic zirconia rather than diamonds.  They were intended to bring the couture ring styles and cocktail ring designs of Hollywood stars to average earners like you and me.

But, I say, the way the term is being used today in the jewelry industry these days, “fashion rings” really refers to rings that run the whole gamut.  Most jewelers, when they talk about fashion rings, are really talking about any ring, no matter what materials are used, that features a trendy, hip or new design. A stylish diamond ring, as pictured, could easily qualify as a fashion ring. So are fashion magazines for that matter.

You might be surprised at how many “diamond fashion rings” there are out there.  Once this term would have been thought of as paradoxical, but today anything goes.  The diamond fashion ring includes everything from vintage diamond ring designs, antique diamond rings, new and trendy diamond ring designs, and couture diamond rings.

So, when you are out looking for a hot new ring to slide onto your finger don’t be turned off by stores that label their cocktail rings or uniquely designed rings as “fashion rings”.  They may very well carry fine diamonds, pearl and precious metal rings despite the “fashion rings” label.
